By now you probably have several posts up on your blog and have dabbled a little in social media marketing, ecstatic over your recent ‘mention’ on Twitter. But you check back days, if not weeks, later only to discover your page views are non-existent! This article is for all of you that find this example all too common. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not a new concept, but mastering it can escape even the savviest of bloggers. Continue reading for a few tips on SEO and some of the more common pitfalls to avoid along the way.
It’s a fairly subtle SEO marketing gimmick, but it stands pretty tall in terms of importance. A logical, easy-to-read web address makes people feel comfortable about what they’re clicking on. Short URL’s (bit.ly addresses) are very popular, and in today’s social media world, they’re somewhat essential when you’re limited to 140 characters…but when you’re linking back to your own product, make sure you give your articles a concise, simple address that just makes sense to people that want to click on it.
In the early days of Google, if you were searching for a specific widget, you’d type ‘red widget’ in the search bar and discover that the first page or two were completely worthless!! Why? Web authors were able to rely on spamming keywords to gain search ranking. At the bottom of their page, they would copy and paste, sometimes HUNDREDS of times, the same word…making it look more appetizing to search engines.
Well, those days are long gone, and the opposite is now true. Overusing specific words, especially multiple times per paragraph, will QUICKLY get flagged by most search engines and you’ll find your rank plummet. So if you believe you’ve got the best ‘red widget’ in the market…that’s great, but don’t open your article by saying ‘Our red widget is the best red widget of all red widgets. In fact, if you find a redder red widget, we’ll personally pay for their red widget and give you one of our red widgets for free.’ Nope, didn’t do yourself any favors there!
Instead, just type like you were conversing to a person in front of you. Today’s search engines are very contextually-oriented and will even flag frequent grammatical and spelling errors. So slow down, take a breath, and just……type normal.
