Welcome to Our Blog
Those Who Are About to Write, I Salute You!
Imagine for a moment…you wake up in the morning, fix yourself a cup of coffee, and walk out to the shaded patio with your laptop to see how many copies of your latest fantasy novel have sold as you wave to your neighbors, who are rushing off to work. As you take those first few sips, you check out your creative writing blog to see that you have 700 new subscribers and over 100 new comments on your latest social media posts. If you’ve ever had a creative bone in your body, this describes the start of your dream day…but how do you get from where you are now to sitting in your bath robe (or not) and waving to your neighbors as they trip over the skateboard on another fantastic Monday morning? How do you turn your right brain into something tangible?
There, Their, and They're
Spend much time reading through blogs and other online material, and inevitably you’ll see one of the biggest pet peeves of the modern day grammar police…the improper use of there, their, and they’re. Like the scratch that you just can’t seem to reach, these seemingly common words have stumped novice and professional writers alike. So suit up (don’t forget your face mask) as we tackle the contemporary ‘White Whale’ of the English Language.
Draw from your own experience
So far, we've discussed ways of constructing your own world utilizing elements of fantasy, and taken things beyond our imaginations, creating an alternate reality. In this installation of our world building series, we're going to delve into creating an immersive world based on your own personal experiences...a world that brings a life of its own to your novel.
Asking the Question...What if?
While building a fantasy world has its perks, sometimes you want to draw on real world experiences.......with a twist! Alternate reality worlds are all about the imagination, and asking the question 'What If' to yourself and your readers. What if the dinosaurs had not become extinct? What if the Germans had won World War II? What if humans had not become the dominant species on Earth? What if we're not alone in this universe? Coming up with the questions is almost as much fun as coming up with the answers. Sci-Fi lovers rejoice as we explore the next chapter in our World Building Series...building an Alternate Reality Universe.
A World All to Your Own...
The Blank Canvas
As we all know, the foundation of any good story is conflict...how did it arise, how was it resolved, and what role did your characters play in it. One of the pivotal concepts of fantasy writing is the ability to immerse those characters in a fictional, yet highly realistic world, allowing the conflict to develop and breathe life into the story without actually becoming the story itself. The situations have to be believable, the terrain needs to make sense, and most importantly, there needs to be a reason for the impending conflict, whether it be personal, religious, political, or economical. Follow along in this series as we explore some of the basic principles of world-building and show you ways to easily develop a backdrop for your story that your readers can appreciate and more importantly, get in to.
